Thermal mud is a unique and extraordinary product, present only in a small part of the world where thermal activity finds favorable conditions in the surrounding environment. It is obtained from the skilful mixture of thin clays with our sulphurous-sulphate-alkaline-earthy-iodic-arsenical thermomineral water.

THE MUD CYCLE OF THE TERME CARONTE

In our spa we wanted to maintain the ancient method of processing/transforming clay into mature thermal mud, favoring tradition in processing with longer times, allowing superior results in terms of consistency and plasticity.

IT IS ORIGINALLY CLAY

Clay is the mineral ingredient from which, through subsequent passages, the thermal mud is reached. It is extracted from a primary quarry carefully chosen for its plastic characteristics and ability to be soaked. It is left to ventilate and dry for the necessary time, after which the clods are crushed and sieved to reduce it to powder. At this point it is ready to be placed in its maturation tanks where it comes into contact with water.

HOW WE USE TIME - TIME BRINGS MATURATION TO COMPLETION

It is in these tanks located in a ventilated environment and exposed to sunlight that the 'magic' takes place- the transformation. The clay is slowly and consistently soaked in thermal water in a continuous flow, day and night. It flows from the source at a temperature of approximately 39°C, for a certified and controlled period, ranging from a minimum of six months to a year. As it slowly flows, the thermal water releases the components of the chemical principles it contains and, thanks to its composition and temperature, allows for the development of the microflora which is responsible for the enrichment and maturation process of the clay easier.

FROM SIMPLE CLAY TO CARONTE THERMAL MUD

The maturation process is linked to the growth of colonies of thermophilic, non-pathogenic microbes, cyanobacteria and microalgae, which form a sticky aggregate on the surface: Bioglee (a set of Cyanophyceae and Diatoms).

This particular process allows us to obtain a thermal mud enriched with the ETS-05 cyanobacterium which produces glycolipidic substances with a high anti-inflammatory activity, characterized by the absence of side effects.

THE QUALITY OF OUR THERMAL MUD

Tradition is the basis of a process validated by modern control methods which attest to the ancient path, always effective and constant in results. It is our Health Director who supervises the processing cycle and places the date and signature on the appropriate plate placed on each tank at the end of filling, verifying the use of the tank with the longest maturation period.

The field of application of mud therapy is represented by chronic arthropathies in their multiple clinical forms; the use of sulphurous mud compresses in dermatology is also well known. The main actions that sulphurous thermal waters have on the skin are: keratoplastic, keratolytic, antiseborrheic, antimicrobial, antiphlogistic, antipruritic and sebum reducing action. The direct topical action in epidermal applications can be expressed in actions: cleansing and tonic, preventive healing, protective. It is indicated for the treatment of rheumatism, inflammation, after-effects of fractures, gynecological disorders (inflammation of the tubes) and for aesthetic use (localized fat deposits, cellulite, remineralising and skin purifying action).

It acts beneficially on muscles and joints, and together with the thermal bath, it brings notable benefits to the muscular and osteoarticular system: its anti-inflammatory action against posture problems, increasing of antioxidant defenses, activation of cellular metabolism, protection of articular and non-articular cartilage, and prevention of harmful gastro phenomena.

The action of the hydrostatic pressure of the thermal waters then facilitates venous return, lymphatic drainage reduces the stasis of interstitial liquids. Repeating this treatment for at least twelve days also leads to an effective action on chronic pain.

Thermal mud is muscle relaxing, meaning it facilitates the relaxation of muscles that are often contracted due to tension or too intense physical activity. It also has an effective "anti-stress" action by stimulating the release of beta endorphins.
